Tamiflu

Tamiflu acts as a neuraminidase (protein) inhibitor. The protein allows the virus to break through the host cell. The flu virus enters the host cells with the help of the protein and multiplies. Neuraminidase enables it to leave the cell and infect other cells. The replication results in the death of the host cell.

Tamiflu acting as a Neuraminidase inhibitor attaches itself to the virus. In spite of their replication in the host cells, the flu virus is not able to leave infected cell due to the presence of the inhibitors. This prevents the flu from spreading, thus destroying the virus at its source itself.

Tamiflu can help prevent flu in case you have been exposed to people infected with flu. It also decreases other ailments accompanied by flu such as weakness, headache, cough, fever and sore throat in just the first day of intake.

Tamiflu has been used to treat type A and B influenzas. It has also been found effective against the bird (avian) flu virus H5N1 strain. The World Health Organization (WHO) has mentioned Tamiflu as the drug for tackling bird flu if ever a human pandemic breaks out.

Tamiflu is available as a capsule containing 75 mg active drug as well as liquid suspension form for oral use. Tamiflu should be taken for a minimum of 5 days and the intake should not be ceased abruptly even if the patient starts feeling better.
